Tree Planting Guide

It is most important for your new plants to receive the best possible start in your garden. When planting, we strongly recommend the use of Gardener & Bloome Soil Building Compost and root stimulator both of which are specially formulated to supply newly planted trees and shrubs the nutrients they need. New planting also require supplemental water to help avoid transplant shock. Throughout the growing season, water deeply on a weekly basis during normal weather and more frequently during hot, dry spells. Follow the additional guidelines to ensure that your newly planted tree gets a healthy start!

Step 1

Containerized plants—Remove the plant from the container. Make cuts to the roots about 2” apart running down the length of the plant (making sure the roots are not circling the plant)/ Encircling roots will inhibit growth of your plant. Loosen the roots on all sides and the bottom. Balled & Burlaped Plants– Peel back the burlap from the top of the plant (do not entirely remove). Cut and remove the rope protecting the root ball. Find the trunk flare, where the trunk meets the large roots.

Step 2

Measure the distance from the trunk flare to the bottom of the root ball. This is the exact depth of the planting hole. Also measure the width of the root ball to help determine the width of the hole. Dig a hole that measures two-three times as wide and the same depth as the root ball.

Step 3

If needed, amend the soil removed from the planting hole with the soil builder– blending about 1/2 of the builder with 2/3 of native soil. Use this amended soil to backfill around the tree.

Step 4

Place the root ball in the hole. The base of the trunk flare should be level with the soil surface. Place soil around the bottom of the root ball to hold it in place.

Step 5

Fill the hole halfway using some of the amended soil (step 3) mixed with the appropriate amount of transplant fertilizer. Water the soil to remove large air pockets and allow it to drain. Continue replacing the soil until the hole is filled to ground level. Do not cover the trunk flare.

Step 6

Apple 2 to 3 inches of organic mulch over the planting area. Do not mound up or place mulch against the tree trunk.
